In this article, we’ll be taking you guys to Playa Negra for the first time since we’ve had the pleasure of being here in Costa Rica. Playa Negra is a dark sand beach that’s somewhat off the beaten path so be prepared to have a bumpy ride there.

But once you arrive you’ll see that the drive was worth it. . . The sand is not as dark as we thought it was light and soft. The atmosphere was amazing, there were plenty of mangroves for shade, and to top it all off they even had a restaurant on the beach! They had a nice-sized swimming pool, hammocks to relax, and even a volleyball net if you and your group wanted to get a quick game in. Aside from the waves being treacherous and the food being a bit pricey Playa Negra lived up to the hype. If you are in the area you have to check it out!

To reach Playa Negra, take a 30-minute drive south of Tamarindo, passing Avellanas, until you reach the small town of Los Pargos. The turnoff is to the right after the soccer field, leading to Hotel Playa Negra. Parking is available in a guarded area, and a pathway between mango trees and howler monkeys leads to the white sand beach.

For surfing, the main reef break is directly in front of Hotel Playa Negra. The sandy beach, suitable for swimming and catching smaller swells, is south of the main reef break. The waves break at all tides, but low tide can be more hazardous due to exposed rocks and faster waves. At higher tide, the waves slow down, providing a mellower surfing experience. High tide is considered the best time to surf, especially during larger swells.

The main reef break site at Hotel Playa Negra offers amenities like a restaurant, surf shop, bar, and swimming pool. In the town of Los Pargos, you’ll find additional restaurants, another surf shop, and a few smaller hotels. Playa Negra has secured parking where you just pay the parking guard” that will charge 2000 CRC to park your vehicle remember make sure not to leave any valuables in your car. Once you park, you need to walk about 2 minutes to get to the beach on a cobblestone path.
